Introduction - Blog exercise 1

Looking at the websites that we were given, I realised that other than the "Photographic Art Prize" website, the photos that were awarded accolades on the"Digital Camera Magazine Photographer Of The Year" and "World Press Photo" websites consisted mainly of human subjects.

Being an amateur photographer myself, I can understand the fascination and appeal of photographing humans, be it in a potrait form or in a candid manner. In fact, I also feel that animals make good photography subjects as well, though some much patience would be needed to get a desired shot.

Why photographs of humans or animals? I personally feel that humans and animals offer a certain degree of uncertainty, which makes them potentially vibrant, spontaneous and unpredictable subjects. It is this degree of unpredictability that produces once-in-a-lifetime photographic opportunities which could also produce award-winning photographs.

Photo-editing should also be considered an important skill in the art of photography. I used to think that good photos were those that were left totally untouched and un-edited. That used to be the case with traditional film photography, but with the advent of digital technology, one can easily edit photos using digital software without much hassle.

Though I must say that traditional film photographs create a certain "feel" which cannot be recreated in digital photographs, editing can sometimes "salvage" photos which, at first glance, may look unusable. Just a few adjustments to the colour, contrast and saturation with some slight cropping will do the trick.

Humans and animals make good photographic subjects because they offer connection to the people looking at the photographs. Ever glance upon the photograph of humans and their eyes or any body language seemed to speak directly to you?

As Tyra Banks always say, when u take photographs, u need to make sure that your eyes talk to the camera. But this makes it even more difficult to photograph humans, especially in candid shots, as connection with the lens are always mere coincidence.

But of coz, not every good photos of humans and animals are always require that particular connection.

Humans and animals are but a subset of nature. The thing that is unpredictable is Nature.

Our environment is unpredictable due to a confluence of nature forces e.g. people interaction, wind, rain, etc.

Humans and animals are not the only subjects that can make connection with the audience through the lens.

For e.g. a photo of a sunset, a tornado, the snow, etc, inspires as much emotions in the viewers. That's because humans have the innate ability to personify non-living objects. That's the reason why you blame your laptop when it's not functioning properly. =)
